Wonderful sushi and vegetarian options here! Because well, sometimes I wonder if Tampere is an annex of Japan. It’s still a medium size city but there are so many sushi places. Every 500m, bam, sushi. And almost all supermarkets have now a sushi bar. So, problem? Yeah, problem.
These sushi are far, like VERY far from what fresh tasty sushi are supposed to be. They all taste the same more or less. The rice is like a little white brick that is doing what Finns seem to praise (with all respect): fill your stomach and don’t care about the rest. Eat those sushi’s and yes brother, you’re loaded. And the more mayonnaise on it, the best. Oh my.
There was one quite expensive place who got it a few years ago but since the restaurant changed location, it’s not worth anymore. But with 2 sushi fans at home, what were my options then? I tried all the places suggested by friends and then I ended the quest. So I bought sushi at the supermarket and like everybody I had these sad sushi platters. And each time: one sushi, flat, two sushi flat, three flat, flat, flat.
How did I hear about Fujimi? No idea but it clicked right away and the day after I took my two little sushi fans there for dinner.
Outside, a sign is saying "Nintei Nihon Restaurant 2020", meaning here my friend it’s going to be authentic Japanese food. Bingo? Yes, bingo friends!
Usually, the miso soup says it all. Here, no pale depressed soup meant to help you unfreeze from inside while you wait for your white bricks to be decorated with "fish". No. It’s a tasty little bowl of soup that is arriving on your table, consistent, real. And it’s not included in any menu if you don’t even want to hear about miso soup anymore.
At Fujimi, they keep their word. Not only you can be served with fresh sushi, sashimi, maki and nigiri platters with a wonderful rice that makes you feel energized, light and fresh, but you’ll find here also delicious "don" (big rice bowl with grilled salmon, shrimps, only veggies or veggies and tofu), beautiful small "yakitori" brochettes, big delicious salads bowl because the vegetarian options are no joke here. You can end the trip with a delicious matcha ice cream. Note that it’s the only dessert and it feels so right.
The place is small, warmly painted, with a touch of Japan. Nothing impressive, simple. Clearly, everything is in your plate. And that’s all I ask.

In a previous life, I used to be a traveling guides writer. Meaning that I was pay to tour a country or a region, test, select ad write about hotels, restaurants, hype cultural spots and natural wonders. It was amazing and I loved it. I wrote about food quite a lot, for French publishing houses and also newspapers, I learned with experts how to train my taste. Well, I’ve always been a foodie and really I loved it. Based on this, I can say that my taste is very strong. Tampere was not the best place to live for foodies but hey, things change, and so this series is my selection for you... And I started this series because I enjoy sharing good things, nothing more.
My evaluation of FUJIMI is based on the followings:
Fresh A
Creativity A+
Vegetarian menu A+
Service, flow, timing A+
Vibe, light, music B+
Spirit, authenticity A+
Hygiene A+
Commitment to sustainability (producers, waste, labels...) unknown
Body comfort (table, chair, display on the table) B+
I use A+, A, B+ and B only. Meaning that the restaurants I share about here are all at the top. If they don’t meet my criteria I’d rather say nothing.
