Thanks a lot to Tatjana Blum for bringing all this info together!!
Urban communal gardening is a great way to grow food locally 🌱 while living in a city! You can explore and learn about e.g. what varieties of veggies 🍅🥒🌶 there are, how to cultivate them and the soil they grow in and what’s best: you don’t need to do it alone! Together with a group of people, you share the gardening work as well as the harvest at the end of the season. 🙌
There are different models of community gardening in Tampere alone, but some places that are welcoming and open to anyone are:
Kalevanharju gardeners, next to the cemetery in Kaleva, Facebook group: Kalevanharjun yhteisöviljelmä - yhteisoviljelma@gmail.com
Hiedanranta’s floating gardens (picture), Facebook group: Hiedanrannan kelluva puutarha
Gardening plots can also be rented for low rent from the City in Tahmela where Kurpitsatalo Kesäkahvio provides a community space for gardeners with gardening tools for use, a library on gardening and more!
Apparently, there is also some communal gardening at cultural centre Hirvitalo - Pispalan Nykytaiteen Keskus, it’s probably worth checking out!
And it’s always good to look around and see if maybe some of neighbors are already doing gardening in your residential area! 😉
Lastly, here’s an absolutely inspiring example from the UK where urban gardeners have been taking over whole towns: Incredible Edible, a country-wide network and movement of community gardeners who support each other in order to create edible cities and meaningful community encounters."
